Is it possible to have hypoglycemia without diabetes? The answer is yes, and it’s important to know why. As more and more cases of diabetes pop up, people are trying to diagnose the early warning symptoms of the disease. Just to get the terms straight, hypoglycemia is a state of low blood sugar or glucose, due to an overproduction of insulin or from a poor diet. Hyperglycemia is a state of high blood sugar usually due to low levels of insulin. Diabetes is the persistent medical condition of a body’s underproduction of insulin, or of a cell’s inability to process the insulin, either of which leads to high levels of blood sugar and dangerous conditions within the body, even death. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are often associated with diabetes because all three conditions have to do with insulin and improper levels of blood sugar. The real difference between the three is that diabetes is a persistent medical condition, whereas hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are states within the body that come and go.
Exercise is beneficial because it will reduce insulin resistance, ward off diabetes complications, help you lose weight, make you feel and look better and help you maintain a steady blood sugar level for life.
Do not panic if the early warning signs of diabetes turn out to be true. You will probably feel overwhelmed if you have a new diagnosis of diabetes. It is true that there is so much information to digest and understand. Don’t get too discouraged – there is even hope on the horizon for a diabetes cure. In the meantime, rely on your “diabetes team” of experts to provide you the specific information you need, as it relates to your specific condition and health. This will include your endocrinologist (a doctor that specializes in metabolic diseases like diabetes), nurses, opthamologist, physician, dentist, nutritionist, and potentially others. In the first weeks and months after a diagnosis, you may find yourself calling these people frequently! Do so!
The blood sugar level rises after the meals and as we age our pancreas is less effective in releasing insulin. Thus, the post meal walk is beneficial for middle-aged people and obese people who are showing signs of prediabetes or older people. The best way to prevent diabetes is to stay close to a healthy diet and physical exercise and at the same time stay close to your ideal weight. Increasing physical activity not only lowers the blood sugar level but also helps in keeping the weight down to normal or at least near normal.
